Hand Tool Basics

An introduction to hand tools, taught over two evenings. Learn to sharpen and use chisels, hand planes and Japanese style saws. By the end of this class, you will know how to properly get a sharp, true edge on hand tools. This is an essential first step to make objects with traditional hand-made joints and to augment your use of power tools. These basic skills are very handy for advanced wood working in the You Can Build It or Maker Club workshops.

Class covers:

  • Types of cutting hand tools
  • Creating a proper cutting edge on chisels and plane blades.
  • Using chisels to create precise pocket cuts.
  • Practice in using hand planes.
  • Japanese pull saw use

After completing this class, you can sign up for the You Can Build It or Maker Club workshops and build your own wood working projects.

No experience necessary. Maximum class size is 7 students. Students under 18 can enroll if a parent also enrolls — or with instructor’s prior approval. Class fee is $84 for 2 sessions of 3 hours each (includes all materials needed for creating a wooden picture frame.)
